If you are planning a direct transmission swap it is recommended to re-use your existing speedometer gear for your new unit. Not recommended for Big Block applications. Did you find this helpful? Randy Poole from North Carolina. I love the way it shifts and it really made a difference in my transmission. We started off on a bad foot, the cork gasket they used for the pan leaked. We went and got a new pan gasket for it and now its working fine.

Get your EGR Vacuum Modulator changed by a top-rated mechanic at the convenience of your home or office. When the vacuum is high, combustion temperatures and airflow are naturally lower so the diaphragm will close and restrict flow, when vacuum is low airflow and combustion temperatures are higher, so EGR flow must be increased.
Any issues with it can cause the system to malfunction, which can lead to increased emissions and other problems. Usually a bad or failing EGR vacuum modulator will produce a few symptoms that can alert the driver of a potential problem that should be serviced. Engine performance issues One of the first problems of a potential issue with the EGR vacuum modulator is engine performance issues.
Apr 28, · TH kick down. Discussion in ‘Engines and Drivelines’ started by tfeverfred, Apr 24, If you want one, hook it up, but you don’t need it performance wise. but on the TH and TH the vacuum modulator controls tranny pressure. The kickdown, which is on or off, nothing in between, has no effect until it is engaged on WOT or.
Powerglide was the first automatic transmission available on a low-priced car. As well as the last of its kind almost a quarter century later. The Hydramatic was efficient, but it was not very smooth. One needs to see these TC transmissions in a different light: TC drive was being used extensively in military vehicles, buses, locomotives, and other heavy equipment due to the great attraction of eliminating the cumbersome mechanical drive and clutch.
It made for a very smooth power delivery. That was the appeal to GM as an alternative to the jerky Hydramatic. Buick bought into the concept first, with its Dynaflow, and Chevy soon followed.
I got a bit of time now for a better more detailed explanation, and to answer all your questions. Now it would if you floor boarded the gas pedal everytime you took off, cuz the Kickdown switch will override the vac modulator. Hooking up you kickdown on a Th will do nothing but give you kickdown. Its electronic, and its either on or off.

The easiest way to tell them apart is with their pan shapes. But this photo also illustrates their outward appearance. CHP The password for cool ’90s street performance is Late-model automatic and manual overdrive transmissions are quickly becoming the sweethearts of the street set. Not that long ago, a fast street car meant compromises, including deep gears, high-rpm highway cruising, and poor mileage.
But the high-tech ’80s and ’90s have brought us more than just electronic fuel injection.

Or are, going in the right direction.
I have a TH trans that I just bought to replace the ailing TH in my ’70 big-block Camaro. A friend told me that there’s a special way to set up the kickdown linkage on .
Its aluminum case is essentially smooth. The rear mounting face of the transmission has a hex bolt pattern with ribs running forward longitudinally. The fluid pan shape is irregular see image, left , being likened unto a distorted Texas pattern. The TH is the largest of the common GM auto transmissions, but still surprisingly compact in light of the immense power they can handle. There are two significant variations of the TH The TH was a version of the transmission used from in smaller displacement cars.
It is identified easiest by its ” THM” designation cast in the underside of the tail housing. The TH was an extra-heavy-duty version, and was found in larger trucks from on. If you are trying to determine the TH from another in a vehicle, a fast way to tell is to look at the kick down mechanism. The TH uses an electrical slide switch, which is controlled by the throttle linkage. The TH uses a mechanical cable kick-down mechanism that is attached to the throttle linkage.
An interesting variable pitch stator feature of the Turbo was available in Buick, Olds and Cadillacs.

Here’s how I interpret the circuit: Follow the Purple wire and select a good place to splice a 12v switch into it. When this switch is in the “off” condition the TCC will not engange at all. If you would like all three options wired then you can do the following:
Hooking up my vacuum line r th, c6, suburbans turbo th, aug 7th, and. Which is basic, the only needed if the vacuum which line connected to hook up rh modulator ever leaks, rh modulator has a .
Adjustable, allowing you to tailor your light throttle shift points with-in a range of mph. Supplied adjusted for normal shift points. If your engine doesn’t make adequate vacuum you will not be able to make the stock modulator work properly, usually resulting in late, hard shifts. I thought that not all modulators had the adjustment screw.
IF you remove the vacuum line, the shift is delayed or not at all On a , shift firmness could be adjusted more so by adjusting the throttle valve cable. Some modulators such as those in fords could be altered by using longer or shorter modulator pins, if they were screw in type, adding modulator gaskets could alter them. Additives that claim that they can soften hard shifts are actually just causing them to slip.
That is why the shift feels softer. For the most part, additives are not good. There is an item called Lube Guard. That is a good product. Adjusting shift points on turbo automatic Quote:
Are you sure that you want to delete this answer? Yes Sorry, something has gone wrong. I own a shop, and check this. Look to see if the hose is off the vacuum line that goes from the intake manifold to the line, and from there on down to the transmission.
Because you need to hook the vacuum switch up to ported vacuum to prevent engagement at idle, in the coasting situation this would open the switch and unlock the TCC. Also, if you hit the brakes, you would also remove power and unlock the TCC.
There is vacuum at the mod as I unplugged it whilst running and held a fingertip over the end to check. I went ahead and got the NAPA guys to get me a new redstrip modulator 10 bucks why not since the old one is rather cruddy and already suspect. I’ll install it tomorrow, weather permitting, along with all new rubber line to the carb, just to be safe and sure. I did go ahead and screw it all the way down until it wouldn’t go any farther, then back a turn, just to see wha hoppen.
I got a little taste for how this truck should have felt since day one with the new engine! Shifted from 1st to 2nd at , HARD, never made it to third, ran out of road. Really got to hear the find its voice and I love it, can’t wait o give it a go with a properly functioning modulator. Cool, so it was the vac mod adjustment. That Vac mod is likely just fine then, it just needed turned way inward. Which is why I suggested at least 2 full turns.

But for the vast majority of would-be swappers, an automatic transmission is the preferred gearbox. From the original two-speed Powerglide, to the three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic and , to the R4 and 4L60E, and finally to the six-speed electronically-controlled transmissions in late model GM RWD cars, many critical dimensions carried over.
TCI will build you a TH or TH in configurations from mild to wild, in various tailshaft lengths, and forward or reverse shift patterns and even transbrake-equipped for dragstrip duty. However, the torque converter bolt pattern and pilot length is different on the LS transmission applications. For owners of classic musclecars already equipped with a serviceable, original automatic, this will be the simplest and least expensive solution when doing an LS swap.
Between the two options, a flexplate swap using the original converter will be cheaper, but considering that the new engine is likely going to have a very different powerband than the one coming out, a torque converter with a more aggressive stall speed is likely to be the more desirable way to go.
Nov 09, · this is the first time for me to mess with a r4 and was wondering if there where any vacum lines i needed to worry about cuz all i found is cooling lines, kickdown cable, and the electrical connection. im used to th’s and i know they have a vac port just wantin to know thanks.
They have been known to have the diaphragm rupture and this would create a loss of fluid in the trans and a shift concern. Pull the hose at the manifold or modulator and check for fluid softness in the hose or fluid. These areas should NOT have fluid in them Most replacement modulators are now adjustable, and they are relatively inexpensive and easy to try. The adjuster screw is inside the unit, you put a screwdriver in the vacuum tube connection. The one on your trans may be adjustable, so that’s the first thing to try.

The teflon rings are not a terrible product but are meant for ‘production’ not ‘overhaul’. I think GM used them because they sort of melt into shape and can tolerate being jammed together by assembly line workers, where a cast ring is a little brittle and you need to watch what you’re doing. They are making sure to add the special features also has switch pitch.

What should I do to strengthen my motor to handle a hp nitrous shot? Are my existing cams big enough to supply the air needed for more bang?
The Caddy XLR is a 4. Can I swap its goodies like the cams and pistons? After rebuilding the block and heads, is the aluminum going to lose its strength? Apparently, the Northstar has a problem with stretching head bolts due to heating up and expansion. Will a JET programmer make enough of a difference to warrant its purchase?
